Celebration of Vivien Edwards’ biography of Mary Sutherland - Scion, 3 June 2021

Abstract: Mary Sutherland (1893–1955) was the first female professional forester to work in this country and she was employed by the New Zealand Forest Service (NZFS) from 1923 to 1932. Her biography, A Path Through the Trees (Writes Hill Press), has just been written by Vivien Edwards. A celebration of the launch of its publication was held at Scion on 3 June 2021. The event was well attended. Andrew McEwen, Chair of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry Foundation, who organised the event, welcomed over 100 attendees, including relatives of Mary Sutherland. He began by reading a letter from Professor Iwan Davies, President and Vice-Chancellor of Bangor University in Wales where Mary graduated in 1916:
